This week I had the opportunity to join EWTN’s Beacon of Truth with Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers for a four day deep dive into Theology of Fitness — a groundbreaking approach to an integrated faith and fitness life rooted in Catholic anthropology.
Day Two focused on the Mental Fitness pillar.
In this conversation, we explored the Church’s understanding of the mind as a gift from God. The mind must be formed, disciplined, and renewed in truth.
We also discussed how modern culture often overwhelms the mind with noise and distraction. Many voices compete to define identity, worth, and even the meaning of the body. However, the Catholic tradition offers a different path.
The mind should not drift wherever culture pushes it. Instead, it must be renewed and directed toward truth. When the mind is ordered toward God, clarity begins to emerge.
Drawing from Scripture and the tradition of the Church, we examined:
- The call in Romans 12:2 to be transformed by the renewal of the mind
- The importance of guarding what we allow to shape our thoughts
- Mental discipline as a path to clarity, focus, and virtuous living
- How modern media and cultural narratives influence how we see the body
- Living in truth about our dignity as persons created in the image of God
Callers joined from across the country and asked thoughtful questions. They explored how faith, mental clarity, and physical discipline intersect in everyday life.
This conversation is part of a four part series on EWTN exploring the pillars of Theology of Fitness. The series examines physical fitness, mental fitness, emotional fitness, and spiritual fitness as an integrated vision of the human person.
